I've been a children's photographer in Raleigh for 20 years now, and I've watched a lot (a lot!) of kids grow up in front of my lens. And one thing I can tell you for certain is every stage of childhood is equally important to capture with portraits. Often times we see people focusing on early childhood - babyhood and preschool ages for photographing portraits. And of course those ages are precious and should absolutely be photographed. But it's equally important to continue to capture your children at 8 and 10 and 12 and 15, etc. I know they look so grown up to you now, but I can promise you in just a few short years, you'll look at these pictures and be amazed at their little baby faces, and how young they still looked.
